Few places in the world are more accommodating to bicycles than Amsterdam, where 320 miles (515 kilometers) of bike lanes allow you to easily traverse the 62 miles (100 kilometers) of canals and its 1500 bridges. Blend in with the locals by hiring a bike and following the bicycle lanes around town. The best spots for leisurely biking are the 19th-century “green lung” of Vondelpark and The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes), a collection of side streets featuring chic boutiques.

The lungs of the city, Vondelpark was once the only public park in the world where one could legally barbecue, smoke joints, and have sex. The latter has since been outlawed (again), but there’s still a relaxed vibe to this green giant’s vast open spaces and wooded trails. Locals come here to run, cycle, play sports or chill, and there are plenty of activities for those looking to make a day of it. On a sunny day, it feels like Vondelpark is the centre of Amsterdam.

Designed and built in 1850, this is Amsterdam’s most famous public green space. Expect to see lots of bikers, walkers and dogs enjoying the park (and in the summer, lots of picnics and lounging in the much-appreciated sunlight). Parents: head to De Vondeltuin in the southwest corner for an epic playground with a cafe where you can sip on cappuccinos while the kids climb their hearts out.
