From the passenger side of his car, painter Earl Staley (b. 1938) filmed every sign on the road from Houston and Galveston, and back, with his Super 8 camera. Staley’s good friend and frequent collaborator, Bob Camblin, drove the car. Their road trip was a riff on Pop artist Ed Ruscha’s 1966 book, Every Building on the Sunset Strip. While the Sunset Strip is just a mile and half stretch in Los Angeles, Staley traveled more than 100 miles round trip on Interstate 45. Click below for the video.

This nationally renowned palace of art starts its displays with ‘Splendors of the Ancient World’, and has a fine collection of pre-Columbian golden treasures from South America. Its chief emphasis, though, lies in tracing art history from the Renaissance, via the Impressionists, to post-1945 European and American painting. Along the way you’ll encounter major works by Tintoretto, Rembrandt and Picasso.

As one of the largest museums in the United States, expect exhibitions and installations galore. Check out everything from Renaissance art to rare African sculptures, before enjoying the resident DJ usually on premise during special events and grabbing a bite to eat from one of the curated food trucks usually parked outside.

Visit the 3-mile-wide Museum District in Houston, where art lovers will find 20 museums dedicated to art, science and history. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, is the fifth largest of its kind in the nation and offers more than 40,000 works from six continents. The museum spans roughly 300,000 square feet and is divided into seven areas, including the Cullen Sculpture Garden, Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens and the Glassell School of Art.
