Sure, newer spots may attract a more hip clientele, but no gay bar in L.A. has had staying power quite like the Abbey. What was initially a small dry cleaners-turned-coffee shop has expanded both its building and its cultural reach numerous times since its founding in 1991. The Abbey’s many bars make room for kink nights and proudly-sinful dance parties alongside family-friendly Sunday brunch on the patio.

10 LGBTQ+ spots to visit in Los Angeles
Time Out9 places
If you instinctively write off going to The Abbey for brunch, it’s your own loss. The most famous gay bar in LA serves good food, and the patio situation is surprisingly laid-back with a crowd mostly of locals. Just about every bar in Weho does a weekend drag brunch on the weekends, but The Abbey’s continue to be the most fun and well put together in the neighborhood.

Where To Brunch In West Hollywood
The Infatuation18 places
In 1991 David Cooley invested in a small, discreet space in West Hollywood he renovated into a coffee shop called The Abbey. Now, The Abbey is a well known gay bar that regularly gives back to the LGBTQ+ community by raising money, hosting events, and banning anti-gay state legislators from the business. There's no better place to hang out with old friends, make new ones, enjoy a 10-ounce martini, and eat a delicious meal.

Spend With Pride in Los Angeles
Intentionalist9 places
We can't talk about Pride and LA without mentioning The Abbey! This place has been an institution for the LGBTQ+ institution and the LA nightlife scene since 1991. Growing up in LA, the idea of hanging out in Weho was really intimidating for me because I struggled with accepting myself, much less being open about my sexuality in a public way. But the Abbey's vibrant, welcoming atmosphere makes it impossible not to enjoy yourself. Extra points for their GirlBar night for the WLW crowd too!"
