The Teatro Metropólitan is one of Mexico's best-known theatres. Before being the Teatro Metropólitan it was known as the Cine Metropólitan, and was built as a movie palace. The architect was Pedro Gorozpe E. with interior decorations by Aurelio G. Mendoza. The Cine Metropolitan opened on 8 September 1943 with the Argentinian film “Dieciséis años” (1943) starring María Duval and Alicia Barrié. Seating capacities were later reduced and given as 3,627 in 1955 and 3,005 in 1971.
