One of London's most amazing attractions, this outstanding modern- and contemporary-art gallery is housed in the creatively revamped Bankside Power Station. A spellbinding synthesis of modern art and capacious industrial brick design, Tate Modern has been extraordinarily successful in bringing challenging work to the masses, both through its free permanent collection and fee-charged big-name temporary exhibitions.

Art lovers have plenty of eye candy to feast on at the Tate Modern, one of the UK's most esteemed contemporary art museums, and the creative hub is also home to one of London's most impressive viewpoints. You don't even need an admission ticket (although you should definitely check out the museum while you're there). Simply ride the lift up to the 10th-floor café and head out onto the covered walkway to sneak a peek at St. Paul's Cathedral, Canary Wharf, and London’s rooftops.

This riverside icon is dedicated to modern and contemporary art, but it's a historic piece of architecture, too: the former Bankside Power Station. Its 2016 Switch House extension added gallery space and incredible 360-degree views of the London skyline. Discover works by the likes of Warhol, Matisse and Bourgeois, all part of the free permanent collection, then take the Tate Boat (decorated by Damien Hirst) along the Thames to Tate Britain. It runs every 30 minutes during opening hours.

Londoners couldn’t believe their luck when Tate Modern first opened back in the year 2000. Here was a space so big and multi-functional you felt you could pretty much live in it: wafting between its galleries, cafés and temporary exhibitions, soaking up the views towards St Paul’s, meeting friends — and generally blurring the lines between gallery-going and the rest of life.
