Dog sledding is an Alaskan tradition, so it’s no surprise that Denali is the only U.S. national park with a kennel of sled dogs. Dog sledding excursions through the park allow you to tour the kennels of Iditarod champion racers and their dogs, observe how they’re trained, and cuddle with puppies before riding in the sled or taking the reins as you mush through the snowy wilderness.

In the Denali area, nearly everywhere is free from human light pollution. With long hours of darkness, the fall, winter, and early spring can be a fantastic time to view stars in Denali National Park & Preserve. Very little light pollution makes the park a particularly great location for stargazing and as well as provides a rare aurora-viewing experience. The aurora is a beautiful, if hard to predict, phenomenon, that occurs year-round. Plan the logistics of your trip using the park’s website.

Alaska has been leading the way when it comes to environmentalism, and with more than 100 national and state parks, plus dozens of threatened or endangered species in the state, this comes as no surprise. Ecolodges, which run solely on alternative power sources, have emerged throughout, and many ecotourism operators offer ecotours and adventures to explore the vast tundra, colossal glaciers, soaring mountains and pristine wilderness of the majestic landscape. Big, remote and wild!
