This Japanese restaurant below the Hotel Chelsea is ideal for a secret rendezvous—it’s moody and dim, even when the sun’s still shining outside. Named for an artist and former hotel resident whose paintings decorate the dark wood walls, Teruko used to be a nightclub, and while not quite clubstaurant territory, it’s retained a whiff of that sex appeal. If you want to wear something shimmery, sip a pickled-ginger martini, eat a few bites of sushi, and listen to upbeat jazz while basking in a buzzy, subterranean scene, Teruko works well for all that. But it's also a good choice in the area for a splurgy, elegant dinner of Miyazaki wagyu (sourced from a famous farm), or the superbly crispy red snapper that manages to upstage the beef.
