A revered soul food spot with three branches around South LA (including a sit-down location on Crenshaw), Dulan’s is an LA institution. At the one the counter-service location in Inglewood, you order from big steam trays full of things like fried chicken and smothered pork chops with gravy, but if you’re lucky enough to visit before they run out of oxtails (which sometimes happens by 6pm), you should make the tender, gravy-covered beef chunks a priority. There’s no wrong way to order here though, and the well-seasoned, golden fried chicken is a reliable fall-back. When it comes to choosing your sides, know that Dulan’s does all the Southern classics very well. From savory string beans and peppery collard greens to creamy mashed potatoes and sweet candied yams, they all help make up one of the most comforting menus we’ve ever experienced. Our favorite is the baked mac and cheese, with its gooey center and crispy edges. But ultimately, we keep all the sides in our rotation, along with an order of buttery peach cobbler to bring home for a midnight snack.
