The chunky bagels at this counter-service spot are delicious—they’re sourced from The Onion Roll in Oak Park, sport a solid crust, and have a pleasantly chewy center that almost caused us to do a rendition of “New York, New York.” But while they’re good in their pure, unadulterated form or with a spread of cream cheese, these Bucktown bagels are best enjoyed in sandwich mode. The Mexican sandwiches are a standout, like El Machismo with chorizo, egg, jalapeños, and habanero cheese. But our favorite is Los Carnitas: shredded pork and caramelized onions, flanked by two halves of a jalapeño cheddar bagel. There are also a few solid breakfast tacos and burritos on the menu, but go for their namesake—it’s called El Bagelero for a reason.
