Based on the name and the readiness with which this place plays Like A G6 remixes, Sangria & Salt in the Mission seems like a spot to unveil a new dance move. In reality, the Latin and Caribbean restaurant is better suited for camping out for a few hours. Skip the tightly packed tables that require compromising your personal space and claim one of the swivelly leather bar stools instead, where you’ll drink and eat under the watchful eye of multiple bartenders. If you’re not downing a not-too-sweet mezcal margarita and the delicious electric blue curaçao Cha Cha Cha—a tribute to the beloved restaurant that used to live in the same space—complete with a tableside blue smoke bubble topping, you’re doing it wrong. The space at the bar can also handle plate after plate of tapas-style ceviche, slightly spicy Cajun shrimp, and plátanos maduros. Portions are surprisingly hefty—three or four “small plates” make a full meal for two. If you want to venture through the rest of the menu, go for the ropa vieja pappardelle and vaca frita, which are satisfying safe bets. More satisfying: there’s almost always a free seat at the bar. So the next time you and a friend (or two) need a place to knock back a few drinks, graze, and catch up, find your way to Sangria & Salt and don’t worry about pre-planning.
