NYC chef-backed restaurant expansions don’t have a history of doing so hot in Boston (see: Bar Boulud; Market from Jean-Georges Vongerichten) but Contessa, the cinematic Northern Italian rooftop restaurant from Major Food Group (a.k.a. the Carbone guys) may finally be cracking the code. Perched on top of the Newbury Hotel, the restaurant feels like a Hollywood movie set where the primary design requirements were glitz, glamour, and fusilli genovese. Similar to nearby La Padrona, this restaurant thrives on big night out energy—if you’ve got something sparkly in your closet, now’s the time to wear it. Thankfully, the food doesn’t just serve as a backdrop to the experience: the prosciutto is silky, the salads are dialed in, and there’s a very good reason why the spicy lobster capellini can be spotted at nearly every table. You won’t regret following suit.
