Bread Boat delivers on its name in what feels like a thoughtfully designed Ikea showroom with a carbohydrate altar. Ordering takes place at a self-serve monitor in front of an open kitchen where you can watch Georgian khachapuri—cheese-and-butter-filled bread boats—being assembled and baked like a live-action Domino's pizza tracker. It's a bare-bones space, but there's just enough art on the walls to give the restaurant character that matches the gratuitous amount of cheese you're about to consume. Austin has other Georgian places with more extensive menus, but Bread Boat focuses on doing one thing exceptionally well. When you want the best khachapuri in town, this is where to go. Beyond the main attraction, there's a thoughtful selection of Georgian wines, plus a few tasty stews, salads, and desserts to round out the experience. And Bread Boat's close proximity to all the East Side bars makes it an ideal spot to load up on carbs and cheese before a night out.
