Bône’s £40 set menu is one of the best things to happen to London since Domino's Two For Tuesday. The lighting at this Hoxton spot is so moodily low that the little chrome lamp on your table becomes less decor and more life support for reading the modern European menu. Which makes sense because roughly 60% of the room is dates leaning in over wine they’ve pulled from their tote bags (it’s BYOB). The rest is friend groups settling in for what feels less like a restaurant meal and more like a dinner party thrown together by your most effortlessly organised friend—helped by a guitarist strumming ‘Stand By Me’ in the corner and the fact that it was actually started by three brothers who run things here after their day jobs. We are charmed. There are two sittings—7pm and 9pm—and they’re always full. Get comfy and don’t fill up on the average bread basket because there’s saucy beef short rib (our favourite) or salmon with creamy parmesan sauce coming. Portions are generous, fries are technically unlimited (although the mound you start with may defeat you), and dessert—like blueberry crumble or french toast—arrives exactly when you think you can’t possibly eat more, but absolutely will (and should). There are extras like smacked cucumbers and caesar salad that you can order for an additional cost, but we’d stick to the set menu.
