There’s no skimping on the sandwiches at Hector’s. Not on size. Not on butter. Not on cheese or any other filling, whether you’ve got your eye on the fried chook, the tuna melt, or the ham-cheese-and-tomato, the Aussie school lunchbox classic reimagined here with mortadella and provolone. Doughnuts come maple-glazed or sugar-dusted and sell out by 12pm. Hector’s isn’t technically a deli—the menu is limited to sandwiches, sweets, and coffee—but everything is made fresh. The original Hector’s occupies an old corner store in Richmond and while it’s spawned many imitators, the only other real-deal locations are in South Melbourne, Fitzroy and the city.
