Ebiko’s first SF location in SoMa (the original is in Oakland) has been mobbed since day one. Lines are always out the door as office workers wait to peruse the refrigerated display case of solid grab-and-go sushi options, most of which are under $9 per roll. The very same sushi that made Ebiko a hit is replicated at this North Beach outpost, only here, there’s rarely ever a wait. Take your pick from over a dozen pre-packed sets, including smoky aburi salmon nirigi, spicy tuna rolls, and—our favorite—a limited-supply seven-piece omakase set that usually includes scallop, salmon, tuna, and ikura. There are also a few great options that aren’t rolls or nigiri. If you’re going that direction, opt for the bara chirashi that’s loaded up with snow crab and bluefin tuna. As with the SoMa location, there’s a sizable Japanese snack shelf with chips and candies to round out your order. Unlike its predecessor, this spot has a table and a few windowside seats, but we prefer to keep the takeout sushi spirit alive and head a block down to eat in Washington Square Park.
