It’s tough to find a bar in River North with a really good craft cocktail for less than $13. And when you do, it’s usually only that price for an hour. Gus’ Sip & Dip is an exciting standout, offering excellent cocktails that are all strictly $12, all the time. It’s a fun, throwback spot that’s stuck in happy hour in the best way. Even at 5:30pm on a Tuesday, Gus’ has an active scene that mixes its vintage look with a typical River North crowd. Couples with heavy second-date vibes fill out the giant bar while being served by bartenders in white coats, and post-work groups commiserate in big leather booths under black-and-white movie star portraits. But what’s not in the room is key to how Gus’ is special for the area: No TVs. No standing patrons hover over you, waiting for your seat. No one is calling out for shots. Everyone has a designated seat that comes with a cloth napkin and full service. It all makes you want to hang out longer than you had planned. The sips are the main reason to come here—the 30 drink options include vintage recipes like a Harvey Wallbanger or a smooth Adonis. The large dishes are a little less exciting and more expensive. But think of this as Chili’s economics. The drinks are cheap, so the sandwiches are helpful, while not necessarily great. Gus’ is smart about so much, and long before you’re on your fourth drink, you'll already be reaping the benefits.
