Chai time may not have the same cachet as afternoon tea in NYC, but it’s catching on, thanks to South Asian cafes like Kaafi, Fontainhas, Ruhani, Tera Mera in Cobble Hill, and now Cheeni in Bed-Stuy. In a spacious room with textile swatches in samplers on the wall (and a narrow side patio), you’ll find Indian-inspired pastries in the morning—like a samosa croissant or rose-pistachio cake—and various snacky dishes throughout the day. You could come to this all-day cafe for breakfast parathas, or jazzed-up Maggi noodles for lunch if you live nearby. If you don’t, plan to meet up with some local friends to try our favorite snack here: the vada pav, served after 5pm, and equally appropriate alongside a mug of hot, spiced chai, happy hour Kingfisher, or a glass of orange wine. Other things—like too-dry phuchkas, or a salad bowl with tofu—won’t spur the same pangs of longing. (Save some space, however, for a post-dinner "tea-ramisu.") But with or without the snacks, Cheeni’s cheerful details—like cut-outs of various South Asian dudes on sticks as table markers—make it a happy place to hang out.
