Picking an Italian restaurant in Back Bay is primarily about picking the level of showmanship that comes along with your plate of pasta. If you’re looking to star in your own glamorous, Italian-accented movie for 90 minutes or so, Contessa or La Padrona are the places to go. If the ball gown is not making its way out of the closet tonight, Faccia a Faccia is your best bet. In comparison, the restaurant is more like a lowkey neighborhood trattoria, if such a thing is possible on crowd-choked Newbury Street. Non-negotiable orders include the Sicilian crudo, where thick, buttery slices of tuna and hamachi are paired with scallops and thick scoops of uni, covered in olive oil, and served with olives, red onions, and capers. The seasonal pasta selection may not be the absolute best in Boston, but it’s reliable and makes for a solid weeknight dinner. Plus, it’s one of the few Italian spots in town that always has gluten-free pasta on the menu.
