There are plenty of places to drink a yuzu highball and other cocktails that use Japanese ingredients. But none do them as well as Katana Kitten, a two-floor West Village bar that should be on your short list of cocktail bars to try in the city. Even though the space is small, it’s relatively easy to walk in at non-peak times, and the food is good enough to stay for a second drink and some snacks. To go along with a martini that uses junmai daiginjo sake and is bursting essence of the hinoki tree, order a couple of plates like popcorn chicken, a katsu sandwich with a fat, fried slab of mortadella, and anything that catches your eye off the specials. Those happen to be particularly good. You might see something like a bowl of soba noodles with mortadella XO sauce. The place is filled with Japanese movie posters and a lot of dollar bills, and generally pretty damn charming. We always stay for at least two drinks if we’re stopping by on a weeknight, but know that on weekends, the bar gets three-people-deep.
