There’s a lot happening at Side A—and the Mission spot pulls it all off. By day, it’s a daytime coffee shop thanks to its collaboration with The Coffee Movement. And at night, the place transforms into a stellar American restaurant that doubles as a vinyl listening lounge, oftentimes featuring a live DJ. Just don’t come expecting a light meal. The one-page menu, which is packed mostly with hits, is all about bistro dishes that lean into the rich and decadent—like a salad that’s about 50% fried pork belly and cheese fries finished off with trout roe and caviar (why not?). Then there’s the behemoth of a bone marrow burger, which comes with instructions from staff to scrape the bone marrow onto the patty and drip leftover juices onto the fries. Wash it all down with a Miller High Life or glass of chuggable house wine. Whether you’re here to take down that burger solo or for a date night with someone who unapologetically wears sunglasses indoors and just got a turntable off of Facebook Marketplace, it’s easy to fall for the friendly staff and cool-kid charm of the minimalist dining room (formerly Universal Cafe). If you can’t get a reservation, they take walk-ups at the bar—just prepare to wait your turn on the sidewalk alongside a handful of aspiring DJs.
