We typically seek out ramen on cold nights, paired with some sake or a Sapporo, but not at Ramen By Ra. This East Village spot specializes in asa-style breakfast ramen, which, paired with some tea, makes for a lovely meal while the sun is still out. Sitting at the counter here feels like being in the tiny kitchen of a Victorian home, surrounded by dark wood cabinets and lacy curtains, and sunshine sparkling off all the crystal glasses. The ramen bowls are crystal too, and ladled to the brim by Ra herself, with delicate shoyu broth. Depending on the bowl, she flavors that broth with various oils for versions of breakfast classics like lox and cream cheese, or steak and eggs. Working your way through the wavy noodles and toppings, while a jazz album spins on the record player, is a great way to rinse off stress. Note that you’ll have to make a breakfast or lunch reservation and pay in advance—or stop by the takeout window for cups of broth and maybe a breakfast bao if you happen to live nearby.
