About

Lanzarote is a Spanish island, sure, but it’s a bit wilder and a bit more tropical than the Balearics — it’s the easternmost of the Canary Islands, and is as close to the coast of Morocco as Ibiza is to the Spanish mainland. It’s by no means an undiscovered destination, but the charm of Hotel Emblemático La Casa de los Naranjos is that it offers a view of a slower and simpler time, and a type of hospitality that’s directly at odds with modern mass-market tourism. As the name implies, the house itself is a well-preserved landmark, a 19th-century manor house, and the décor is an eclectic mix of antique and contemporary elements that everywhere pays tribute to the historical setting. Its eight bedrooms are all distinct but all share the house’s style of relaxed elegance. A lovely à la carte breakfast is included, served in a dining room that overlooks the hotel’s gardens. And while the on-site diversions are minimal — this is no resort, obviously — the village of Hariá is close to both beaches and mountains, and is conveniently located for hiking, snorkeling, or simply touring this compact volcanic island.
