You know you’ve made it when someone puts a life-sized statue of you outside your restaurant (see: Ronald McDonald). Such is the case at Sushi Zanmai, the first U.S. location of a casual Japanese sushi chain run by the country’s so-called Tuna King. Once you’ve navigated to the front door inside Koreatown’s chaotic Chapman Plaza, you’ll find the king waiting, a squat five-foot man welcoming you with arms outstretched as if to say, “Come, enjoy my reasonably priced, high-quality tuna.” And true to form, if you stick to tuna at Zanmai, you’ll have an enjoyable meal. Orders are placed via a digital tablet on each table, and with a quick scroll, you’ll find the king's glistening goods on display: lean tuna, fatty tuna, medium-fatty tuna, seared toro, negitoro, as well as tuna donburi, tuna sashimi, and yes, spicy tuna crispy rice. Our go-to order is the $42 Tuna Zanmai sampler, a 10-piece nigiri set that covers the restaurant's greatest hits and is large enough to split. The rest of Zanmai’s menu covers the sushi bar standards, including appetizers, tempura, grilled dishes, and a few rolls. Aside from the tuna, however, everything else is pretty standard. The other wrinkle? Zanmai in Japan is famous for its bargain nigiri. That's less true here, where prices are a tick higher than at high-value places like Sushi Gen or Sugarfish. That said, the streamlined service and low-key space make Zanmai ideal for a weeknight sushi fix, particularly if you’re near Koreatown. If you’re making a special trip, though, make sure to prioritize the tuna. They didn't give the king a statue for nothing.
