Czechs have been removed from the communist era for long enough that they are comfortable making jokes about it. Lokál, an excellent gastropub in Old Town (that has spawned six other locations around the Czech capital), is an inside joke for Czechs who lived through the period. The colorful plastic bread baskets,, the servers’ (sometimes) indifference to diners, and the cheap wood paneling on the walls, Lokál makes not-so-subtle references to Communist-era pubs in the 1970s. But there’s fortunately one big difference: The food here is topnotch pubgrub. Since this was the very first of a mini chain and its location is in Old Town, if you want a more, um, local experience, venture to another Lokál outpost out of the center of town.
