Matsumoto Jujo literally means “ten stories,” but not in the architectural sense — this is an ambitious redevelopment of a 17th-century inn in Asama Onsen, and is dedicated to continuing the story of this long-established resort town. Though what stands here now looks modern, its architects took care to preserve as much material from the original inn as possible. In its new incarnation it comprises a pair of hotels, both of which feature a private spring-fed onsen bath in every room, so that the original public baths could be replaced with a restaurant, a shop, a café, a bakery, and a bookstore.
