Built from the carefully preserved buildings of a 12th-century abbey, Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine is as historically evocative as any château in France — and, thanks to the work of architect Marco Serra, it’s a first-rate contemporary luxury boutique hotel. It’s set on a vast estate in Valladolid that’s home to some 500 acres of vineyards, a property so large that it can only be properly seen on a guided Jeep tour that ends with a tasting in the old winery’s atmospheric barrel rooms. Other memorable venues for sipping wine include the quaint cloister garden, a courtyard terrace with a telescope for stargazing, and the Calicata Terroir Bar on the vineyard’s edge. The hotel also counts among its attractions the MICHELIN-Starred Refectorio restaurant, the more casual Vinoteca, and a spa that combines wine-country products with the precepts of Tibetan medicine. Rooms and suites overlook the vineyards and the pine groves beyond. Many have floor-to-ceiling French doors and balconies to make the most of the view, while a few on the ground level open directly onto the lawn. The look is elegant but modern, with oak flooring, stucco plaster walls, custom walnut furniture, and stone-lined bathrooms filled with natural light. Some feature the abbey’s charming wood-beamed ceilings, and suites have Carrara marble bathrooms with freestanding tubs. Luxe in-room amenities include butler service, sophisticated lighting systems, a high-end pillow menu, and, of course, a complimentary bottle of wine.
