Sometimes we want a really good seafood dinner in an environment that’s situated comfortably between white tablecloths with golden utensils and old wooden booths with plastic baskets of fried fish. That’s when we head to Wahoo Grill—a charming Southern seafood-focused restaurant in Decatur that works for all occasions. The menu is big enough to be a crowd pleaser—even picky eaters can find something to enjoy between a very good cheeseburger and great mac and cheese. Crispy fried chicken with vinegary collards prove they can do Southern plates as well as the best of them. But in this landlocked city, there are only a few semi-casual places with seafood this good. Blackened grouper gets boosted by a spicy Cajun crab cream sauce. Seared scallops are topped with a heirloom tomato confit that explodes with sweetness. Chow down in the energetic front room where the sounds of clanking pots is a dependable soundtrack and where you can spy on the “Yes, chef” show as all the plates leave the kitchen pass. But if you’re looking for a romantic setting, the back solarium is it, with one entire wall of glass and greenery galore. But both rooms make for a pleasant place to tuck into a bowl of black truffle mac and cheese that’s so creamy you can barely see the noodles.
