When someone suggests doing dinner and drinks, Palo Santo makes it easy to do both without having to hunt for your valet ticket. This modern Mexican restaurant and rooftop bar on the Westside is a moody, multi-level showstopper. Downstairs, towering concrete walls and windows hidden by giant brown drapes makes it feel like some secretive, underground dinner club. In reality, the always-crowded dining room confirms it’s the worst-kept secret in Atlanta—that this is where to go for food and feels with a lot of zest. The open kitchen flaunts its wood-fire grill early and often with flames shooting up periodically. And when you spot the heads of cauliflower dangling above the open fire, know that one of these smoky, miso-glazed beauties needs to make an appearance at your table. In fact, everything that kisses the fire here, like the flaky branzino that gets a nice crispy char, is a must order. And the toasted chili salsa macha adds an exciting burst of heat to tuna-topped housemade tostadas. Most of the dishes are designed to share so only come here with people you don’t mind clanking forks with. When the last of the buttery bone marrow has been scraped and every bit of the branzino has been picked over, it’s time to move upstairs to the rooftop for after-dinner drinks. Even on a light night (like Wednesday), there's a line at the bar for spicy honey mezcals and margaritas rimmed with burnt tortilla salt. On weekends, expect a full-blown party—a DJ plays house music so loud you can usually hear it on the street and people dance in a half-ass fashion so they don’t spill their cocktails.
