A lot of Irish pubs double as neighborhood institutions, and O’Neals — with its Irish-flag-colored exterior—has been one since it opened on South Street in 1979. Order an ice-cold Guinness, and it’ll arrive poured with the kind of precision that only comes from decades behind the bar. But this isn’t the kind of green-clad, soccer-obsessed pub that takes itself too seriously. There are two happy hours (4:30-6:30pm downstairs and 6:30-8:30pm upstairs), friends squeezing in a game of darts between pints, and karaoke nights on weekends. And if you need to pad your stomach after belting out your power ballad, the pierogies, flaky fish, and chips will do the job.
