Don’t try to put Oken into a box. The Rockridge restaurant serves mostly Korean and Japanese dishes, with other Asian influences making appearances throughout the shareable menu. Much like Ok’s Deli by the same team, their playful twists on traditional dishes work. Get to the tastefully cat-themed spot to split fiery Sichuan popcorn chicken with a date, or go all in on silky scallion omelettes, kalbi ssam, and zingy albacore tataki with a group of friends. No matter why you’re here, though, the guaranteed best bite of the night is the yukhwe onigiri. It’s a golden-brown fried rice ball topped off with an umami bomb of beef tartare—and you won’t want to share.
