Chicken Fried Palace serves the kind of heavy-duty meals you’d expect from an old-school diner, like platters of chicken-fried steak with toast and potatoes on the side, as well as a daily selection of inch-tall pies. But aside from the menu and some bar stools, the place isn’t quite a retro time capsule. The Mission daytime spot plays lo-fi beats, and friend groups pile into curved, pastel-pink booths to share a fantastic Bloomin’ Onion smothered in chili crisp, mayo, and pickled onion powder. It’s a good place for a hearty breakfast or lunch. Just skip the pies for now, which let us down with bland flavors and soggy crust, and avoid primetime hours if you’re in a rush.
