Like so many former East Villagers that now live in North Brooklyn, the Williamsburg location of Veselka is a bit more buttoned up than the original, legendary East Village diner. There’s less direct-from-the-bar, drunken making out in the booths here—people are more likely bringing their kids in to try their first blintzes. The filling Ukrainian comfort food and diner classics here hit all the same high notes though. We're sure that over time, as enough chicken schnitzel sandwiches and 20 ounce beers are consumed in this larger, slightly less sticky space, Veselka Williamsburg will fill up with just as many memories as the original. If you don’t have at least four forms of potato on your table—mashed, french-fried, latke-d, and stuffed in a pierogi—you’re probably ordering wrong. Those potatoes will fill your stomach the way a night in watching early aughts Disney Channel movies fills your soul, and a meal here is especially satisfying after a long day of walking around Williamsburg. This location is currently only open for dinner, but unlike in the East Village, you likely won’t have to wait for a table.
