Peace Bakery might have the curb appeal of the average North Austin strip mall restaurant, but behind those large glass doors are two giant rotisseries and a 20-foot display case that houses a variety of glistening baklava, stewed vegetables, fresh salads, and whipped spreads. This is what Luby’s would have become if it had spent its formative years on the Mediterranean Sea, and it’s one of our single favorite ways to spend a lunch hour in Austin. Food is served cafeteria-style, but other than the point-and-order format, there’s very little in common between Peace Bakery and a dining hall. The menu is made up of Palestinian and Mediterranean classics, and you are guaranteed to leave full. And while we’ve enjoyed every entree that we’ve tried here, it’s the shawarma that regularly flits in and out of our dreams. It’s best at lunch when the stack of meat spinning around the flaming rotisserie is still about two feet wide and both proteins are at peak moisture levels. Grab a wrap, or build your own plate (which includes sides) like we usually do. When they’ve finished assembling your meal, make sure to also order one of every baklava from behind the display case.
