About

If we made a list of what creates great restaurant ambiance, “warm,” “intimate,” and “dimly lit” would be somewhere near the top. Fallow Kin, the newest venture from the Tallula team, doesn’t notch any of those boxes, but somehow it doesn’t matter. Approaching the front door for dinner, blazing overhead lights make the sidewalk feel like daytime. That brightness continues indoors, where it’s all Scandinavian-style blonde wood seating and shining-white lamps. Somehow, all those factors work together to create a space that feels less like an alien abduction than it might sound, and more like a clean slate for trying something new. Plus, it will make your food pictures look great, if you’re into that kind of thing. Fallow Kin sits in the space that used to be Craigie On Main, which served one of the most beloved burgers in Greater Boston. For locals who’ve held a candle for that burger since Craigie closed in 2021, Fallow Kin brought it back on their bar menu. Their homage comes in the form of wagyu beef, cheddar sauce, giardiniera, mycelium, and a sesame potato bun. Aside from the burger, veggies are the star of the seasonal menu, which focuses on fermentation to reduce food waste. We love the sweet caramelized carrot topped with deeply savory duck prosciutto and toasted sunflower seed sauce, and the ultra-thin slices of pickled pear atop the roasted parsnip. The Rhode Island squid offers a welcome alternative to fried calamari and comes filled with cornbread and parsnip stuffing, fermented chiles, and a caramelized lemon purée for dipping. The cocktail program, meanwhile, leans into produce—think strawberry vermouth, persimmon, golden beets, and sunchoke spirits—but it’s the fig leaf martini you need to order. It comes in both traditional and half sizes, but we usually gravitate toward the latter. There’s just something about an ice-cold miniature martini that feels especially playful, like a doll’s tea party but with booze.
