When Finnerty’s in the East Village closed during the pandemic, New Yorkers originally from the Bay Area lost their home away from home. But ever since the San Francisco-centric sports bar reopened in Midtown, the Golden Gate Bridge feels closer than ever. So close you can, sort of, reach out and touch it: The front-door handles at Finnerty’s are made out of old reclaimed cable from the bridge. The new location feels more sleek and corporate than the old, with high, arched ceilings and an address directly across the street from the Empire State Building. But Finnerty’s still has plenty of fernet-fueled local charm. While it gets appropriately rowdy during games, this is nevertheless a good spot for an after-work drink with colleagues if you work in the area. (Or a light bite off their pretty standard menu of wings, cheeseburgers, and hot dogs.) Even if Derek from accounting doesn’t totally grasp the significance of the life-size painting of Willie Mays making The Catch, it’s still nice to look at.
