At Lee’s Hawaiian Islander, the tiki drinks are not made with 17 ingredients and limited-edition Caribbean rum. On weekends, you might hear someone mangling Lil Wayne’s “A Milli” before being censored for a swear word by the karaoke operator—with everyone else blissfully ignoring the on-mic argument that follows. For vintage tiki bar kitsch and flaming pu pu platters, there’s no place more fun than this Lyndhurst, New Jersey institution. At least not within the tristate area. Lee’s is the self-proclaimed last old-school tiki bar in Jersey (after Chan’s Dragon Inn in Ridgewood closed in 2020), and they’ve been mixing up strong, if somewhat indistinguishable, coconut-themed drinks since 1974. With a sprawling dining room and an upper floor that you can reserve for parties, it’s a great choice for a wacky birthday, or a slightly unhinged evening surrounded by posters of winking, grass-skirt-wearing girls. The groups of people sitting in the thatched booths all seem to know each other, and the staff will quickly make you feel like you’ve been coming here forever, too. In this huge, bamboo-covered spot, with masks on the imposing stone wall and a canoe suspended from the high ceiling, they still make everything from scratch—from the punchy mustard and duck sauce to the bowl of fried wonton strips you munch on with your drink. Some of those drinks come in a pineapple-shaped mug, and others come with a warning from Nancy (whose father-in-law started this place): “If you drink more than three of our Zombies, we’re taking your keys.” Get some fried snacks and, if it’s a Friday or Saturday, go ahead and bust out your worst attempt at Cher or Miley Cyrus. Even if that one booth in the corner is keeping up a running commentary, no one is really judging you.
