In an era of constant gentrification, solid Chocolate City spots are few and far between. But His & Hers takes the nostalgia of old DC, mixes it with modern trends, and turns it into a casual American restaurant that serves some of the District’s best food. The Woodridge restaurant is often packed with regulars from around the way looking to unwind after work with a tropical Hers cocktail or have a brunch day party that’s lively, but not… Rosebar. It’s all “slim” this and “moe” that, with an occasional “ay, shawty” thrown in. Go-go and old school hip-hop pump through the speakers, but anyone who’s dancing is mostly doing it from their seats—the knees in here ain’t what they used to be. The long upstairs bar takes up most of the main dining room, though there are handfuls of silver high tops for two. Friends and families gather around for brunch and dinner, packing the standard black tables with the city’s best spinach and artichoke dip and one of our favorite versions of chicken and waffles. The menu doesn’t miss, made up of well-seasoned comfort food that you’ll crave whenever you need to go from the Hulk back to Bruce Banner (or are just jonesing for some crispy salmon fingers). Down the stairs inscribed with “Da Butt” lyrics, there’s a lounge space with a smaller bar and a few group tables. And most Saturdays, you’ll find diners bartering over soaps and body butters with local business owners running pop-ups. Sure, there’s a grassy wall and a neon “His & Hers” sign—signatures that the spot was born in the 2020s—but the ambiance stirs up old school DC in a way that puts it on the short list of the city’s best restaurants. The low-key party vibes and delicious food make it easy to want to be a regular, if you’re not one already.
