In its early 20th-century heyday, the Grand Hotel in Mürren hosted skiers from all over Europe, earning the nickname “Switzerland’s first palace.” Almost 150 years after first opening its doors, and just in time for ski season, the landmark is reborn as the Hotel Mürren Palace. Many of the building’s original assets remain — the dazzling setting on a high-altitude plateau, panoramic terraces facing snow-capped peaks, crackling fireplaces warming up a lively après-ski scene — and a new building has been added. The old ballroom has been turned into an elegant breakfast area, and rooms have been smartly updated with parquet floors, midcentury modern décor, and stylish bathrooms, many with tubs. Suites and maisonettes have extra living space and perks like Jacuzzis or kitchenettes; every room has a private balcony overlooking the mountains and the Lauterbrunnen Valley below.
