Walk down Vanderbilt Avenue in Prospect Heights on a weekend, and you’ll see a small line of people waiting outside of Gertie. You should join it if you’re in search of a nice, low-effort lunch. From the same people as Gertrude’s around the corner, Gertie started its life as a Jewish-American diner in Williamsburg, and this pastel-covered iteration is counter-service only. We still aren’t huge fans of their bagels (they’re just too dense for our jaws), but their sandwiches are a different story. If you live in the neighborhood, you should add their turkey club, loaded with pickled peppers on some caraway-forward rye bread, to your lunch rotation. Eat it in their big backyard (or take them to go), and split some crispy latkes with apple butter.
