Eating at Mariscos El Submarino in Greenpoint requires a bit of negotiation with your upper respiratory system. It’s easy to get swept up in their delicious aguachile—order the negro or verde, and you’ll get a molcajete filled with raw seafood for scooping onto fresh tostadas—but soon enough, you’ll notice your throat is on fire from all those spoonfuls of what's ostensibly liquid serrano chili. That’s when you order another beer, and get right back to it. Drink, eat, say sorry to your esophagus, repeat. This Mexican seafood spot is just as casual and just as good as the original location in Jackson Heights. (The walls even have the same grinning cartoon lobsters.) The difference is, at this Greenpoint location, there's a patio leftover from when the Mariscos team briefly had a Mexican steakhouse concept. Come with a date and sit outside as the sun sets. Just don't be surprised when the staff quotes you a 2-3 hour wait—you're not the only person who realized that eating cold fish feels more natural outside. Our suggestion? Make a reservation at least a few days in advance if you want to sit on the patio. Ultimately, the best seat in the house is anywhere that gets you in front of molcajete, taking down as much spicy seafood as you can, tonsils be damned.
