Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop is a total charmer. Not to be confused with the original, Neapolitan-style Paulie Gee’s around the corner, this is a slice joint with suburban pizza parlor spirit. Order up front and eat in the back room. There’s beer and wine in there. Sports play on the huge TVs, and the music is cranking too. You’ll rarely have to fight for a seat, and we’re partial to the slime-green bar stools. It’s a great hang, whether you’re just killing time or need a place to get to know someone without spending a boatload of money. Our only wish is that they stayed open a little later than 10pm on weekdays and 11pm on weekends. As for the pizza, it’s pretty good. They do classic NY-style and square slices, including plenty of vegan options. The best slice is the sesame seed-bottomed upside-down Sicilian, which goes by the name Freddie Prinze. But in general, the crust is a tad thick and the sauce a tad bland. Maybe the pizza used to be a little better when it first opened in 2018. Paulie Gee’s isn’t a destination-worthy slice shop and that’s OK. Sometimes being a neighborhood cornerstone is more than enough.
