From the team behind one of our favorite takeout sushi spots Silver Rice, Don Udon is a 13-seat udon shop with a chalkboard sign out front that simply reads, “Udon.” If you live in Crown Heights, you will feel highly territorial about it after one visit. They have both cold and hot udon, as well as rice dishes like gyudon and curry rice with pork. For the best of both worlds, go for a combo, like the kake udon combo. Once you’ve ordered, a woman behind the counter dunks noodles into boiling water until they’re just chewy enough, then pours scalding, dashi-laced broth over them. She arranges ikura and shiso gently on top of a bowl of hot, vinegared rice, before sliding your new favorite lunch over to you. Bonus points for it costing less than $20.
