As the story goes, La Voile on Newbury Street exists because a Swiss-American sailor in France (stick with us here) fell so in love with a bistro near where his yacht was moored that he decided to recreate that same restaurant in Boston. The restaurant is an American love letter to an old-cinema idea of France, from the well-worn red banquettes to the long white tablecloths and uniformed, French-speaking waiters bustling around the dining room. At nearly 20 years old, the restaurant is a traditional French bistro frozen in time. This is not the place to come if you’re looking for any sort of modern bells and whistles in your French fare (seriously), but if les fromages and les moules frites paired with a crisp glass of bordeaux blanc sounds like heaven, you’ll be right at home.
