Hidden away in a picture-book, bird-tweeting area of woodlands in Highgate, this charming cabin-esque community cafe is exactly the kind of place to plan a big wholesome weekend walk around. Queen’s Wood Cafe is also presumably where Hansel and Gretel go for a flat white now that they’re all grown up and need somewhere to park the kids’ Bugaboo for a couple of hours. Inside, it’s a cosy little portrait of village life. There’s a bell on the counter, stylish retirees slow-sipping frothy cappuccinos in the coveted alcove in the corner, and a blackboard menu of nice warm breaded things. We think it’s admirable to have cheese on toast on your menu in the 21st century, but you can also expect cucumber sticks with hummus for all the little ones present who aren’t yet sporting adult molars, and the no-name ‘white wine’ for any chic north London parents in dire need of a glug. If you do come during the weekend, know that there will be a queue. Do not resent the queue. It’s one of life’s rare opportunities to eavesdrop on sizzling gossip about the interpersonal relationships of the local horticultural society while watching a blow-dried pedigree spaniel chase its own tail. It can feel a little cramped and chaotic at peak times. So, once you’ve secured a toastie and a wedge of buttercream-topped carrot cake, head out to the covered veranda overlooking the woods or nab a picnic table in their allotments out back. Yes, they have their own allotments. Welcome to N10, baby.
