Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company has six locations, and not a single one is in Brooklyn. Ultimately, that is none of our business. But here’s something that is: Their original Astoria shop serves soft, moist bagels that are some of the neighborhood’s best. We’re partial to two off-the-beaten-path bagel varieties here, both of which could have been cribbed from a Y2K-era Panera Bread menu: the eggy, not-too-sweet french toast, and the jalapeño asiago with subtle back-end heat. (Brooklyn Bagel did open in 2002.) But for something more substantial, get the signature Bkbagel Classic on everything. The sandwich is well salted, with every component—nova, scallion cream cheese, tomato, capers, and red onion—in just the right proportion.
