At the a’Bouzy team’s new restaurant Succulent in Regent Square, the velvet chairs and floral plateware do almost as much work as the kitchen. And upstairs, a rooftop patio with pergolas and greenhouse enclosures might just be one of Houston’s prettiest. Succulent is a West Coast-style fine dining spot that draws River Oaks regulars, birthday parties, and usually one group where everyone at the table orders the (excellent) steak frites. The menu, and the decor, take cues from Napa Valley, sneaking in herbs grown on the rooftop and indulgent touches like caviar-topped deviled eggs, where basil cuts the richness and an XO sauce adds a funky edge. Some dishes stand out, like a rosy rack of lamb, tender and aromatic with a spiced pistachio-and-dukkah crust and sweet onion soubise. Others, like the roasted chicken in lemon beurre blanc, are competent enough but won’t stick with you. The California-heavy (of course) wine list covers an entire back wall, with high-end bottles by the glass so you can explore without going all in, while cocktails like the gin-and-basil Sharp & Serene are bright and balanced. And the beverage menu doubles as a complaint form about the missing valet, complete with instructions on where to send your gripe (though there’s still garage valet, and a QR code for validation). That might feel a little strange, but Succulent is still a great place for lingering—grab a drink, eat some lamb, watch a stylish crowd toast and laugh, and catch the sun sliding behind Regent Square.
