The humble duo of pizza and beer has been fueling birthday parties, bowling nights, and dive bar trivia wins for well over a century, probably. And while most days we’re perfectly content with a soggy, greasy slice and a cold pitcher of whatever’s on tap, Moody Tongue Pizza in the East Village takes the classic combo and turns it all the way up to 11. At this Tokyo-style Neapolitan pizzeria (from a Chicago-based brewery that also has a sushi-and-beer spot in town), the smoky, blistered margherita pairs well with crisp rice lagers that go down easy. There’s plenty of indoor seating across two dining rooms and a bar, with a TV casually playing Sailor Moon. But the best way to experience Moody Tongue is outside on St. Marks, for a lazy afternoon of people-watching through your tiniest sunglasses. With inventive takes on Neapolitan pizza from a former Song'E Napule chef, a long list of spritzes and expertly brewed beers, and snacks like negitoro crispy rice, Moody Tongue is several steps up from the couch, while still being a low-key spot for a timeless duo.
