St. Pizza on Magazine Street feels like a northeastern slice shop went on vacation in New Orleans and planted some roots. There’s a sit-down tavern that hums with conversation and clinking glasses, while a street-facing counter slings slices and whole pies to go. The thin-crust pizza is objectively excellent—the red sauce is zesty and flavourful with a pinch of sweetness, and the baked-to-perfection sourdough crust sets the bar. The aforementioned no-reservations tavern in the back is what really sets this place apart, though. You’ll find couples cozying up at the bar or squeezing into a nearby table, and the whole space feels like a standard living room. Their muffaletta pizza, topped with Central Grocery’s olive salad, is something you’ll only find in New Orleans, and the caesar salad might be the city’s best, with crisp romaine topped with heaping mounds of parmesan and tossed in a quintessential amount of creamy dressing. After you’ve eaten, or perhaps while waiting on your go-order, pop over to their sibling wine bar, Patron Saint, for a bottle of wine and maybe some chocolate or caviar.
