We know someone who went to Bunny to get dinner, had a great time, but completely forgot to eat. She snagged a seat at the bar, and got so distracted talking with one of the bartenders that before she knew it, the kitchen was closed. That’s the thing about this walk-in-only Bed-Stuy restaurant. The tiny team here—that bartender, plus the couple that runs the place—are so good at suggesting just one more glass of Austrian red, or turning service into a full-on dance party, that you could quite easily forget you meant to get the schnitzel. It’s low-key enough for a random weeknight, candlelit enough for a sexy little date night, and friendly enough for a solo drink at the bar, whether or not you end up eating. Don’t be like our friend though, because between all the wine pouring and record-spinning, the couple (who are from Istanbul and Hamburg) also serve some satisfying food. It’s a little bit Turkish, a little bit German, and a little bit whatever the heck they wanted to cook that day—maybe arctic char with potatoes, or, on a cold day, some vegetable stew. He cooks, she serves, and everything tastes like it was made by someone who knows how much you like butter in your rice. That buttered rice arrives under lamb kebabs, which are essential, as is the chicken schnitzel. When they’re done for the evening, if nobody has started dancing, the couple abandon their posts, grab drinks (he has beer, she wine), and say hello to friends at the bar. Or, they head outside to a small bench in front, where they sip in silence, and say quiet goodbyes to everybody as they leave, like parents seeing kids off after a big holiday dinner. That’s how it feels pretty much every night at Bunny, unless it happens to be August. During August, that couple goes on vacation, and the restaurant is closed.
