Lil Chippy’s name refers to the British slang for a cheap fish and chip shop. This rendition, however, has swam out into the deep end to make breaded hake and haddock, as they will tell you, “crispy and classy.” Instead of ordering behind a greasy glass window with a surly fishmonger, the restaurant space is minimally designed with cute prints of fun fish puns. It’s a great low-key lunch or dinner move, precisely because the fish, wine, and everything else is anything but casual—they make homemade buns for their “buddies,” a.k.a. sandwiches, and have perfectly crisp fries that you can (and should) make “salt and vinegar’d.” Get some Old Bayoli sauce on the side to dip all your fried goods in.
